Who to Ask For Support

Does your child need extra help at school?

We know that without some extra help some children will not benefit fully from school education. That is why in Scotland, all children have a right to receive the additional support that they require to meet their individual needs and to help them make the most of their education.

Parents also have rights that give them more of a say in their child's education as well as more opportunities to express views about the support they feel that their child needs.

Who to Ask For Support

Step 1: Speak to your child’s school about whether your child has additional support needs

One of the rights parents have is that they can ask the education authority to find out whether or not their child has additional support needs.

Step 2: Your school may arrange for an additional support needs assessment to be carried out by your local education authority

Parents also have rights to request a specific type of assessment and/or examination. Any such request must be capable of being kept for future reference. This could be a letter, email, CD, tape etc.

Parents should explain what assessments you would like your child to have, outlining why you believe it necessary. If you are unsure about the process, contact your education authority – it will have a contact person for you to speak to.
